"Giving every child the chance to thrive, wherever duty takes their family."

The Duke of York’s Royal Military School

Guston, Dover, Kent, CT15 5EQ

The Duke of York's Royal Military School is a co-educational state boarding school for pupils aged 11 to 18, set in open countryside above Dover in Kent. Founded in 1803 to educate the children of serving soldiers, it is today an academy sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and one of only two state boarding schools in the UK established specifically for Service families. Around 470 pupils board, and there are no day places.

Boarding is full, weekly or flexi, organised in houses with a home-from-home atmosphere and pastoral staff who understand deployment, assignment and the rhythms of Service life. The school keeps its military heritage in its ceremonial life, with a Grand Day parade, a corps of drums and a military band, while operating as a mainstream academy following the National Curriculum. Its six values are courage, integrity, respect, commitment, loyalty and self-discipline.

Entry points are at 11 and at 16 into the sixth form, which is housed separately in Centenary House and runs a pathways programme with leadership opportunities. Ofsted last inspected in February 2023 and judged the school Good overall, with behaviour and attitudes and personal development both Outstanding.

Because the education is state-funded, families pay for boarding only, which puts a full boarding place within reach of Service families who would find independent boarding fees difficult. Families claiming Continuity of Education Allowance should confirm the school's current status on the MOD Accredited Schools Database before committing to a place.
