The event marked a milestone for the school’s involvement with Silver Stories, a national charity that combats loneliness by pairing schoolchildren (known as 'Silver Readers') with older people ('Silver Listeners'). Every week, the children telephone their listeners to read stories and poems aloud, fostering deep bonds, boosting the children’s reading confidence, and providing vital social interaction for the elderly.

The celebratory tea party allowed the children and their listeners to meet face-to-face for the first time, sharing stories, laughter, and tea in the school's dining hall.

"The atmosphere in the room was absolutely magical," said Ed Benbow, Headmaster at Hazlegrove Prep School. "Seeing the genuine joy on the faces of both the children and our guests truly highlights the importance of community. Our pupils don't just learn within the classroom; initiatives like Silver Stories teach them empathy, compassion, and the profound impact a simple conversation can have on someone's life."

Research shows that chronic loneliness can have a devastating impact on the health of older demographics, while intergenerational projects significantly improve well-being for both the young and old. Hazlegrove’s commitment to the charity ensures that local residents feel valued and connected, while giving pupils a purposeful way to contribute to society.

Following the success of the tea party, Hazlegrove plans to expand the programme, encouraging more pupils to become 'Silver Readers' and inviting more local residents to join as listeners.
